West Brisbane Corridor

Brisbane’s western corridor is home to several new residential estates, with more planned in the future. Located only 40 minutes from the Brisbane CBD and 1 hour to the Gold Coast, the region has one of the fastest growing populations in Australia, with an estimated 40% population increase by 2041. The region needs approximately 250,000 new homes by 2041 and is currently growing at twice the rate of the rest of south-east Queensland.

Infrastructure Projects

The western corridor is located in south-east Queensland between the Brisbane CBD and Ipswich. Ipswich is the oldest provincial city in Queensland and has a population which now exceeds 250,000. More than half of the available industrial land to be developed in south-east Queensland is located in the western growth corridor. There are many exciting developments and infrastructure upgrades currently underway in the region, such as:

Mater Private Hospital Springfield: $85 million upgrade with an 80 bed facility, state of the art medical facilities, and recognised as a finalist in the 2017 Property Council of Australia Innovation & Excellence Awards.

Ipswich Hospital, St Andrews Private: $64 million expansion of St Andrew's Private Hospital comprising of 231 bay car park, new intensive care unit, 2 operating theatres, 81 new patient rooms, 26 bed maternity ward with 3 labour delivery suites, new rehabilitation unit and gym, and a new pharmacy.

Further to this, other projects include:

  • University of Southern Queensland

  • Rail to Brisbane and Gold Coast

  • RAAF Amberley Air Base

  • Robelle Domain Water Park Ripley Play Centre

The development of the western corridor is a key feature of the South-East Queensland Regional Plan, and the timely provision of infrastructure to lead development is vital in supporting this growth. To support population and employment opportunities around the region, the program focuses on upgrading existing and constructing new roads and public transport facilities.

The program also recognises the strategic importance of the freight links in the western corridor and the expansion of utility networks for power and water provision. Across the Western Growth corridor and within Ipswich City there are currently over $100 billion in infrastructure commitments across varying stages of development.

These investments include:

  • Ipswich Motorway Upgrade

  • Corinda to Darra/ Redbank Rail Upgrade

  • Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor

  • Centenary Highway Extension

  • Springfield passenger rail line

  • Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor

$1.5 Billion Town Centre Masterplan

The masterplan vision caters to the projected growth of the region, with approximately 133,000 new residents predicted by 2036 and draws on the 20-minute neighbourhood philosophy. Creating a low carbon community with seamless access to healthcare, education, recreational, commercial, community, sporting facilities and proposed train station all within a 20 minute walk.

The masterplan will include the Civic Heart providing a central community and cultural space, the Esplanade which features indoor and outdoor dining overlooking green space, and the Green where young professionals, students, and creatives will live, work, and learn.
